How to Store an E-Bike Battery Safely
Store an e-bike battery in a dry, stable location within the temperature range in its manual, away from heat and combustible materials.

Battery storage workflow
Storage percentage and temperature limits are system-specific; one manufacturer’s guidance is not universal.
Use the manual’s storage charge target because manufacturers do not all specify the same percentage. Inspect the case, connector and charge behavior before storage, and use only the supplied or manufacturer-approved charger.
Short storage between rides needs less preparation than a winter shutdown. Long storage adds two jobs: monitoring state of charge at the interval stated by the manufacturer and checking that the location remains dry and temperature-controlled.

Choose the storage charge from the battery manual
A battery’s displayed percentage is an estimate from its battery-management system, not a direct laboratory measurement of every cell. Storage recommendations reflect the pack’s chemistry, BMS behavior and allowable self-discharge. Copying a percentage from another brand can conflict with the pack instructions.
Record the displayed charge and date before long storage. If the manual requires periodic checks, use its interval and approved charging method. Do not leave a pack unattended on charge or assume that a charger should remain connected for months.
Temperature affects safety and aging
High heat accelerates lithium-ion aging and can raise risk when a pack is damaged. Freezing conditions can put some packs outside their permitted charging range. A cold battery may need to warm to the specified temperature before charging, but it should stay away from heaters and open flames.
Use a dry indoor place that will not become a hot car, an unventilated metal shed or a damp basement. Keep the battery stable so that it cannot fall, be crushed or contact metal objects at its terminals.
Inspect the battery before it goes onto the shelf
- Check the enclosure for cracks, deformation, swelling and impact marks.
- Look for leakage, discoloration, severe corrosion or an unusual odor.
- Inspect the accessible connector and charge port without inserting tools.
- Note unusual heat, rapid charge loss, repeated cut-outs or charge errors.
- Confirm that the charger, cable and plug are the approved items and have no visible damage.
Do not store or charge a pack that is swollen, leaking, unusually hot, damaged or showing severe corrosion. Follow the manufacturer, local fire authority and hazardous-waste instructions. Do not put a lithium-ion e-bike battery in household trash.
Remove the battery only when the manual permits it
A removable pack may be easier to keep in a suitable indoor location, but removal and installation must follow the bike’s procedure. Switch the system off. Support the battery so that it cannot drop, and keep the key and mounting mechanism free of force.
Some batteries are integrated into the frame. Do not dismantle the bicycle or open the enclosure to create a storage solution. Store the complete bike within its specified conditions or ask the manufacturer or dealer for the approved process.
Winter storage checklist
- Read the battery and bicycle manuals for storage charge, temperature and check interval.
- Inspect the pack and charger. Quarantine any damaged item.
- Bring the pack to the specified storage charge with its approved charger.
- Record battery ID, displayed charge and storage date.
- Place it in a dry, stable location away from heat and combustible material.
- Check the pack at the manufacturer’s interval without opening it.
- Before spring use, inspect the bike, battery, tires and brakes, then make a controlled test ride.

Questions about e-bike battery storage
What percentage should an e-bike battery be stored at?
Use the percentage or charge range in the battery manual. Bosch specifies 30–60% for its systems, but that figure should not be applied to every pack.
Can I store an e-bike battery in a garage?
Only if the garage remains within the battery’s temperature and moisture limits and provides a stable location away from heat and combustibles. Garages with freezing winters or high summer heat may be unsuitable.
Should I leave the charger connected during winter?
Follow the battery manual. Do not assume long-term connection is allowed. CPSC advises staying present during charging and unplugging when charging is complete.
Can I charge a battery straight after bringing it in from the cold?
Charge only within the temperature range stated by the manufacturer. Let the pack reach that range without direct heating, and check for condensation or damage.
How often should I check a stored battery?
Use the interval in the manual. Self-discharge and BMS consumption vary between systems, so a universal monthly or quarterly rule is not reliable.
Specify storage conditions before approving a fleet battery
