Why one fixed MOQ or one lead-time promise cannot describe a serious electric two-wheeler program—and how to build a schedule that survives production reality.

Planning basis

Jimsen sets MOQ by project because the base platform, component quantities, color split, printed packaging, tooling and annual forecast all affect the economic minimum. In-stock samples can ship quickly; samples are paid and the fee may be credited against a qualifying bulk order when agreed. Jimsen quotes the production period after reviewing the final configuration, material status, buyer approvals, current production load and season. A new-product development program is typically planned around three months when the scope and approvals stay controlled. This is a planning reference, not a guaranteed completion date.

MOQ is an economic result, not a factory slogan

Buyers often ask for “the MOQ” before specifying the model, battery, colors or packaging. A responsible answer must be conditional. An existing platform in one standard color with available components is different from an order split across five colors, a customer-specified cell, new display software and printed cartons.

A good quotation separates four quantities: reference samples, engineering or compliance samples, trial commercial order and repeat-order volume. Combining them into one MOQ creates unnecessary negotiation.

Use the right type of sample

A sample is not simply “one unit.” Its purpose determines its configuration and price.

Avoid this shortcut

Do not approve a stock sample and assume a changed production battery, motor or controller will perform identically. Record every difference and define how the production component will be validated.

The four clocks in an e-bike order

  1. Development clock: concept, structure, tooling, sample and validation. A new product is typically planned around three months.
  2. Material clock: battery, motor, controller, display, tires, brakes, packaging and any buyer-specified component. This may start before final sample approval only for controlled-risk items.
  3. Production clock: line preparation, assembly, inspection, rework and packing. Jimsen confirms this period for the specific order after reviewing the final configuration, material availability, approval status, current production load and season.
  4. Logistics clock: dangerous-goods file, freight booking, port schedule, customs and destination delivery. It is not part of assembly time.

The critical path is the longest dependent chain. Adding all activity durations is wrong when work can run in parallel; promising the shortest task is equally wrong.

Lead-time start must be written

Use a precise trigger such as: “production lead time begins after deposit, approved golden sample, frozen BOM/software, and final packaging artwork.” “After order confirmation” is too vague.

An illustrative order-planning scenario

Consider an illustrative existing-platform commuter project with custom color, logo, manual and carton but no new frame or body tooling:

This is a planning example, not a guaranteed calendar. Peak capacity, component availability, sample revision and certification can move the dates.

What commonly stops the clock

  • The buyer has not decided the legal power/speed configuration.
  • The approved sample contains a temporary component.
  • A custom battery cell, controller or display has no confirmed production date.
  • Artwork contains missing importer details, translations or barcodes.
  • Certification testing starts after the production configuration is already frozen.
  • The buyer changes colors or quantity splits after material ordering.
  • A quality issue requires containment, root cause and reinspection.
  • UN 38.3 test-summary or other battery shipping documents do not match the pack.
  • The selected carrier or port cannot accept the planned battery shipment.

A weekly risk register should show owner, due date, schedule impact and contingency for each item. A simple “on track” status hides more than it communicates.

Trade terms and ports do not remove planning responsibility

EXW, FOB, CIF and DDP can be discussed according to the project, and the shipping port can be selected for the route. Each term changes who controls pickup, export, freight, insurance, import and final delivery. Buyers should compare total landed responsibility—not only the quoted freight line.

For CBU, SKD or CKD projects, confirm the assembly state, packing list, tariff classification and destination capability before final pricing. Disassembly can affect packaging volume, local labor, end-of-line inspection and customs treatment; it is not automatically cheaper.

  1. Which elements create the project MOQ?
  2. Is the sample a stock reference or the intended production configuration?
  3. Which sample costs can be credited to a bulk order?
  4. What event starts development, material and production lead time?
  5. Which parts are long-lead or subject to supplier MOQ?
  6. How does peak season change the production slot?
  7. What buyer approvals are on the critical path?
  8. What happens if inspection fails?
  9. Which Incoterm, port and battery-shipping route are assumed?
  10. Which costs are recurring and which are one-time?

Can an in-stock sample ship immediately?

Available models can be prepared quickly, but payment, inspection, lithium-battery carrier acceptance and destination logistics still affect dispatch.

Is the sample free?

How does Jimsen determine mass-production lead time?
