1. How to choose a Chinese electric bike manufacturer

“Electric bike manufacturer” can describe very different commercial relationships: distribution of an existing brand, private labeling of a validated platform, specification-led OEM production, hybrid platform customization or ground-up ODM development. Neither proves that a supplier accepts private-label work, controls the required processes, supports the buyer’s order size or can produce evidence for the target configuration. 4. Run a three-round shortlist

6. Verify compliance against the production configuration

Compliance evidence must be configuration-specific. Match the report or certificate to the model, battery, charger, controller, motor, software and product classification that will be produced. If a critical component changes after testing, the responsible engineering and compliance parties must assess whether existing evidence remains applicable.

  3. Identify the party responsible for each test, declaration, label and technical document.

7. Separate factory capacity from the committed production slot

Annual capacity describes a system across product types, lines and seasons. It does not reveal the buyer’s production date. Ask the supplier to reconcile the relevant line, bottleneck cycle, shifts, efficiency, changeovers, current commitments, material availability and expected yield for the proposed model.

The commercial document should state when lead time starts and which approvals must be complete. A sample approved for appearance is not automatically approved for production; the BOM, software, packaging, labels and acceptance criteria also need controlled release.

8. Check origin, tariff and shipment evidence separately

An assembly address is not proof of origin, and a marketing description is not a customs classification. Before committing to landed cost, have the responsible importer or adviser verify the current tariff treatment, origin rules and required shipment documents for the exact product and route.

Use current official tools rather than copying a rate from an article: USITC Harmonized Tariff Information, EU Access2Markets, UK Trade Tariff and Canada Customs Tariff. Confirm the code, product description, origin, value basis and effective date with the responsible authority or customs professional.

Ask the supplier to map the quotation entity, manufacturer, exporter, component origin records, bill of materials and shipping documents. CKD, SKD and CBU are packing or assembly descriptions; they do not by themselves establish preferential origin or duty treatment.

9. Use the first order to validate the operating system

A first order should test whether the agreed controls survive production. Before release, freeze the critical BOM and software settings, approve the golden sample, define inspection criteria, confirm packaging, assign change authority and establish the after-sales evidence path.

Verify manufacturer status without relying on labels

The word “manufacturer” in a company name does not prove that the supplier controls welding, painting, assembly, testing or component purchasing. Ask which processes are in-house, which are subcontracted and which legal entity owns the order. A trading company can coordinate a project well, but the buyer still needs to know who controls drawings, BOM changes, quality records and corrective action.

Check the vehicle as one electrical and mechanical system

Motor wattage, battery voltage and battery Ah do not define a complete vehicle. The controller current, BMS limits, connector system, wheel diameter, brakes, frame, suspension, thermal conditions and software settings must work together. A 72V label or a larger Ah number can create new current, heat, space, weight and compliance constraints.

Ask the supplier to issue a controlled configuration sheet. The sheet should identify fixed specifications, configurable items, items that require engineering approval and the revision used for the sample. A buyer comparing OEM and ODM development should also confirm who owns the base design, custom changes and dedicated tooling.

Turn quality claims into an inspection plan

“Strict quality control” is not an inspection method. Each checkpoint needs a characteristic, test method, acceptance limit, sample size or frequency, responsible person and record. The useful question is whether the factory can show how it controls the characteristics that can stop the vehicle, create a safety risk or cause repeated field complaints.

  • Incoming checks should cover the approved component identity and critical specifications.
  • In-process checks should verify assembly operations that are hard to inspect after completion.
  • Final checks should match the approved vehicle, market configuration and release criteria.

How many suppliers should reach the audit stage?

Is the lowest compliant quote the best choice?

Not automatically. Compare the same configuration, development work, evidence, inspection, packaging, trade term and change rules. A lower unit price can exclude work or transfer risk that another quotation makes explicit.

Can annual capacity prove delivery time?
